Republished in autumn 2017, this is an all new transcription and translation of the 1067 Carmen Widonis - the earliest and most detailed account of the Norman Conquest.

There are four appendices with substantial new research: I.

Imperium in Britain to 966, II.

Imperium in England 966 to 1066, III.

A New Geography of the Norman Conquest, IV.

Royal, Papal, Urban and Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions.

The Carmen follows William the Conqueror from Normandy to St Valery-sur-Somme to the Sussex coast to the blood-stained ridge of the battlefield, to King Harold's burial, to Hastings, Dover, Winchester, Westminster and London.

It is the most complete account we have of the events of 1066 and the events it narrates are those deemed important to the conquerors.

Original research on changes in coast geography suggests the Normans landed in the Brede Basin of East Sussex, now the Brede Valley.

It was then a huge estuarine port formerly named Portus Hastingas & Pevenisel by the Gallic overlords.

The port and rich salt pans, iron mines, potteries and foundries were possessions of Fecamp Abbey in Normandy from 1017 until seized violently by outlaws Godwin and Harold during their rebellion against King Edward the Confessor in 1052.

The Norman fleet landed in the basin and the army camped near the port.

They raided the region for supplies, cattle and slaves, but stayed at the port to force King Harold to come to them.

The battle of Hastings likely occurred on a ridge facing the port valley known to the Saxons simply as Senlac - 'sandy loch'.
