Following the death of her mother, Franziska turns away from love in order to pursue a career as a concert pianist.
She goes on from a humble home in a small Czech town, to Prague and a life that does not conform in any way to convention.
It all ends in Berlin, with a bitter lesson learned: the fragility of life, and how debilitating love can be.
