Ambientada en la Nueva Inglaterra de los puritanos del siglo XVII, La letra escarlata (1849) narra el terrible impacto que un simple acto de pasi n desencadena en las vidas de tres miembros de la comunidad: Hester Prynne, una mujer de esp ritu libre e independiente, objeto del escarnio p blico y condenada a llevar la A de Ad ltera ; el reverendo Dimmesdale, un alma atormentada por la culpa aunque digno de la estima general, y Chillingworth, un ser siniestro, cruel y vengativo, que maquina en la sombra.
La presente edici n incluye una introducci n de la catedr tica Nina Baym, cuya labor investigadora se ha centrado en el estudio de la literatura americana del siglo XIX.
