Three months after Halia moves from Hawaii to Thailand in the 1980s at the age of nine, she gets caught in the largest flood and landslide Thailand has ever seen.
Logging was then banned because deforestation was to blame for the landslides.
This changes the fate of the Thai logging elephants that are in captivity, and as Halia helps with the conservation eff ort, she finds that the life-changing influence the elephants have on her will prepare her for the challenging trials she will experien.
