In 1932, two years after the first Antarctic expedition, a second expedition sets off.
Before the expedition leaves, a stranger gives a notebook to the director of the cruise Howard Pym - who is a professor at the University of Miskatonic - asking him to read it before they reach Antarctica.
Preoccupied with the voyage ahead, he forgets about it.
