The book tells the true stories of a number of Norfolk women in the first half of the twentieth century, at a time when women were just beginning to achieve equality in politics and in other spheres of life.

It ranges from the women's suffragette movement, through nursing and efforts at peace-making in the First World War to the concentration camps of the Second World War.

Chapters on the 1920s look at the advances made by women in politics, and also at the flourishing literary and artistic scene in the county of Norfolk.

On the Second World War it recalls a number of women who found themsleves involved in the Holocaust and concludes with the story of a Polish refugee who died in Norfolk in 1946.
