It sounds like fiction, but it's not: in 1884, a tightrope walker with a wooden leg arrived in Corsicana, Texas.
He attempted to carry a stove on his back as he crossed, he fell, and the stove landed on him, crushing him.
Before he died he refused to give his name or disclose anything about his identity, except to say he was Jewish.
His gravestone, in Corsicana's Hebrew cemetery, bears exactly two words: ROPE WALKER.
