In the 1820s, Washington Irving wrote two of the most famous and best-loved tales in all of American storytelling.
One told of the mild-mannered schoolteacher Ichabod Crane and his terrifying encounter with the ghost of a fallen soldier, the fearsome Headless Horseman.
The other recounts the adventure of lazy Rip Van Winkle , who hiked into the Catskill mountains and joined in a game of bowling with a band of little men who resembled Henry Hudson's Dutc.
