It is 1945 and while England is once again at peace, it is a time of challenge as returning soldiers find themselves strangers to their loved ones, while the women have managed to keep their families safe and fed on their own.

When Rose meets Joe, a widowed airman with a young son, she gives them her friendship and gradually her heart.

But when Rose's brother Freddie comes home with a German wife, the woman is shunned by neighbours.

And Freddie has a secret which threatens to destroy Rose and Joe's relationship.
